Today’s original equipment manufacturers need enhanced ways to manage supply chain risk. Supply Dynamics was recently awarded a contract by MxD (Manufacturing x Digital) to create such a solution. MxD is one of 14 advanced manufacturing institutes funded by the Department of Defense. Under the project, Supply Dynamics will create a modular, machine learning enabled Dynamic Risk Mitigation Engine (DRME) that integrates supplier, bill-of-material, and event-based risk information to produce recommendations aimed at preventing supply chain disruptions before they happen.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the need for supply chain managers to have greater visibility over their multi-tier supply chains. Manufacturers can no longer afford to operate without visibility beyond their tier 1 suppliers. Trusting that critical parts and materials will ‘show up on time’ is not a winning strategy. Manufacturers need accurate data, down to the most basic materials that go into their products and they need a way to mitigate supply chain risks before they happen.
The contract award will enable Supply Dynamics to further enhance its award-winning visibility and analytics platform for multi-tier supply chains, SDX. Machine learning enhancements will take into account more than 90 natural disaster and man-made event risks as well as dozens of complex multi-tier supply chain variables. The tool will analyze these risks by generating actionable recommendations to ensure the uninterrupted flow of parts and materials to a product assembly line.
Latter stages of the project involve deployment of the Dynamic Risk Mitigation Engine (DRME) in a live, operational environment at a $16 B producer of aerospace power and propulsion systems. The solution will enable the aerospace and defense giant to achieve visibility across their multi-tier supply chain. Greater visibility will make possible opportunities to identify cost savings and supply disruptions before they happen and will assist the company in choreographing complex n-tier supplier interactions.
The project will yield tools to increase the resilience of any supply chain network.
